At Otaki College we use Te Kawa o Te Ako to underpin everything we do. This includes Whanaungatanga. These Te Kawa o Te Ako have been developed from our local iwi and Te Wananga o Raukawa which is a significant part of our community. However, we had to make them our own. For us, it is all about relationships and how these are so critical, whether student-student, teacher - student, teacher-teacher, and whanau relationships. We all have responsibilities that go with these relationships and it is how we nurture and foster their growth that is critical. These go hand in hand with each other. Without one, something else may struggle. For example, without Manaakitanga can Whanaungatanga develop and grow?


  • Kotahitanga—the development and maintenance of a unity of purpose and direction
  • Pūkengatanga—the preservation, teaching and creation of mātauranga Māori
  • Kaitiakitanga—the obligation to foster and protect all living things
  • Manaakitanga—the expression of mana-enhancing behaviour towards one another.
  • Whanaungatanga—the reciprocal rights and responsibilities that flow from the interrelationships of all living things

whanaungatanga (noun)relationship, kinship, sense of family connection - a relationship through shared experiences and working together which provides people with a sense of belonging. It develops as a result of kinship rights and obligations, which also serve to strengthen each member of the kin group.
